Why is it necessary to perform a no-load test before using a grinding wheel?

No-load testing is an essential safety pre-inspection step before using grinding wheels, with its core purpose being to identify hidden risks and stabilize equipment operation. It serves two specific functions.

First, it detects hidden cracks. Some internal cracks in grinding wheels are invisible to the naked eye. Under no-load conditions, the centrifugal force generated by the wheel's high-speed rotation can gradually widen these hidden cracks. If severe defects exist, the wheel will reveal the issue during idle operation, preventing breakage accidents during loaded use.

Second, it stabilizes the operational state of both the equipment and the grinding wheel. Immediately after startup, the equipment's rotational speed fluctuates. Idling for 1-2 minutes allows the speed to reach a stable value while acclimating the grinding wheel to rotational conditions. This prevents sudden increases in grinding force during loaded startup due to abrupt speed changes, which could cause the grinding wheel to shatter or the workpiece to fly off.

During idle testing, operators must stand to the side of the grinding wheel, away from the front danger zone, and ensure no obstacles are present nearby. Idle operation must last at least 1 minute. Only after confirming no abnormal noises or noticeable vibrations occur should grinding operations commence.
